Troubles in Bear Land

"It is so amazing. We love it and every time we look at it we see something new! Thanks Joan!"

Mary Gaffey

"As my wife and I were walking through our woods one day I noticed this huge burl on a tree marked to be harvested by the DNR with our forestry plan.  Shortly after I came across Joan's article in the Our Wisconsin magazine, which was perfect timing.  I said to my wife a burl from our own woods would be a beautiful and symbolic piece of artwork in our cabin.  So I called Joan to see if I could bring her my burl.  She said that would be fine, so we set up a date and time.  I had friends help me load the burl up into my wife's car, as it weighed over 500 pounds.  We got to Lakewood with the burl and Joan and Ken were amazed to see the size of the burl.  We unloaded the burl onto Ken's snowmobile trailer and Ken mentioned that the burl would barely fit in the saw to be cut.  The drying process took a long time, which Joan had informed me it would.  Ken did a great job drying the wood to end up with more than just one workable piece of wood for Joan to use.  Joan gave me a call when the pieces of the burl were dry and she gave me some options of different pieces and the possible artwork to go with them.  I made my selection and chose the biggest piece.  Joan gave me periodic updates on how the artwork was coming along, which I was always excited to see.  In the end I took home a one of a kind piece of artwork. Thank you so much Joan and Ken for the work you put into this beautiful piece for our cabin."

"Our first exposure to Joan and her works of art was in a summer 2014 issue of "Our Wisconsin", and since we were in the area we drove around and found her studio.  We were enchanted by her work, and when she mentioned that she worked with burl wood we were beyond thrilled.  We have had a cherry burl in our woods for quite a few years, and we (with guidance from Joan) cut it and took it to her and waited somewhat patiently for the wood to go through all of the steps necessary for her to work with it.  It means so much to have this piece on our "home grown" so to speak, wood.  Joan's artist eye found so many animals in the wood and it is going to be a treasured addition to our home.  It was a pleasure to work with Joan, and if we find any more burls in the woods she will be getting another call."
